Unrest in Northeast: Meitei Refugees Find Shelter in Assam
Tragic Incidents Shake Manipur: Meitei People Seek Refuge in Assam Amid Rising Tensions
Silchar, Assam: Recent events in Manipur have left the Meitei community deeply distressed, leading some individuals to seek shelter in neighboring Assam. In light of a viral video showing two women being paraded naked in Manipur, an ex-militants group advised Meitei people to leave Mizoram, triggering apprehensions about their safety.

On Saturday night, forty-one Meitei individuals, including college professors and senior government officials, arrived in Silchar from Mizoram, choosing to take refuge in Assam. The Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, confirmed that they have been accommodated at the Lakhipur Development Block building in the Binnakandi area.

Despite assurances from the Mizoram government regarding their security, the Meitei refugees decided to seek safety in Assam, expressing their intention to stay until the situation in Mizoram stabilizes. Assam Police has stepped up security measures to ensure their well-being during their stay.

This turn of events comes after the May 3 ethnic violence in Manipur, which saw an influx of refugees from the Meitei, Kuki, and Hmar communities seeking sanctuary in Assam. However, tensions arose when some Meiteis returned to their home states due to the ex-militants' group's advice and the disturbing impact of the viral video on the community.

The Mizoram government, in response, has reassured the Meitei people of their safety and urged them not to be swayed by rumors. Nevertheless, the decision to move to Assam highlights the prevailing apprehensions among the Meitei community.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress drew attention to another heart-wrenching incident in Manipur. According to a report, an 18-year-old girl in Imphal East district was handed over to four armed men by women vigilantes and later subjected to a brutal assault and gang-rape on May 15. The incident was made public after more than a month, raising concerns about other unreported atrocities.

The TMC, which recently visited the northeastern state, questioned the accountability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in light of the escalating law and order situation.

As these tragic incidents continue to grip Manipur, both Assam and Mizoram are working to address the concerns of the affected communities and ensure peace and stability in the region. The safety and well-being of the people remain a top priority, and authorities are actively striving to restore normalcy and create a secure environment for all citizens.

It is essential to highlight the significance of addressing such distressing incidents promptly and sensibly. The escalating tension and safety concerns in Manipur underscore the need for comprehensive law and order measures and accountability from the authorities to restore trust and safeguard the citizens' lives.
