ULFA-I Warns Assam DGP Against 'Encounters' Amid Extortion Allegations
ULFA-I Denies Involvement as Assam Police Pursue Extortion Cases.
Guwahati, July 24, 2023: The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), commonly known as ULFA (I), has issued a warning to the Assam Director General of Police, GP Singh, regarding the alleged encounters of local people who are reportedly extorting money in the name of the banned outfit.

The warning from ULFA (I) comes after the recent arrest of two individuals with suspected links to the organization. One of them, Hem Chetia, was apprehended in Dibrugarh and was injured during a police encounter while trying to escape. The other individual, Pushpanjali Gogoi, was arrested at Dibrugarh University campus. Both were accused of extorting money in the name of ULFA.

However, it is important to note that the police are currently investigating the actual affiliation of the arrested individuals with the banned outfit. They suspect the involvement of other operatives and are actively pursuing arrests in several districts, including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo, following reports of extortion demands.

In response to these incidents, DGP Singh has issued a strong warning against any activities carried out under the name of ULFA. He has directed the security forces to take decisive action against anyone involved in making extortion demands or collecting money in the outfit's name.

On the other hand, ULFA (I) has denied any association with the arrested individuals, suggesting that they might have been used by others who falsely claim to be part of the organization for personal gains. The outfit clarified that they have no connection with those engaging in extortion activities.

Moreover, ULFA (I) has accused the Assam DGP of being involved in what they describe as "fake encounters" and demanded an immediate halt to such actions against locals. They have also threatened that if such actions are not stopped, the DGP should leave the state. The situation remains tense as both sides maintain their positions.

It is important for authorities to thoroughly investigate the alleged extortion cases and ascertain the true affiliations of the arrested individuals. Maintaining transparency and adhering to the rule of law will be crucial in resolving the situation and ensuring peace in the region.
