The grim discovery of the young woman's mutilated body occurred three days after she went missing from Silchar town on July 15, causing widespread outrage and sorrow in the community. Responding to the shocking news, hundreds of people in Silchar took to the streets in anger, preventing the police from taking the victim's body to the crematorium. The Police Superintendent, Numal Mahatta, confirmed that they swiftly identified the primary suspect, Pinak Suklabaidya, within just 24 hours of recovering the victim's remains. Mahatta disclosed that the victim and Suklabaidya were in a relationship, and the initial investigation pointed towards him committing the murder on July 15. The police acted promptly, leading to his arrest on Wednesday.
Based on the investigation, it was revealed that Suklabaidya, who lived in Bengaluru, met the young woman upon his return home on July 13. On the day of the incident, he allegedly lured her 30 kilometers away from Silchar and then strangled her. After committing the gruesome act, he left her lifeless body in an under-construction building before fleeing to Guwahati. Suklabaidya is now facing serious charges under the Indian Penal Code, including Section 302 for murder, Section 364 for kidnapping, and Section 201 for attempting to destroy evidence related to the crime.
