In a significant development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ongoing Manipur violence for the first time and expressed his anguish over the shocking incident of two women being paraded naked in the state. The video, which resurfaced after two months, has sparked outrage and condemnation from all quarters of society.
Speaking sternly, PM Modi said, "The Manipur incident is shameful for any decent society. My heart is full of pain and anger." He reassured the nation that no guilty party involved in the heinous act would be spared and emphasized that the law would take its course with full force. "What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven," the Prime Minister asserted.
In a call for unity and a plea to rise above political differences, PM Modi appealed to all Chief Ministers across the country to prioritize the safety and protection of women, irrespective of state boundaries. "I appeal to all CMs to protect all our women, be it Rajasthan, Manipur, or Chhattisgarh. We should rise above politics to protect women," he urged ahead of the Parliament monsoon session.
The disturbing video, showing the two women being paraded naked, emerged on the internet on Wednesday, reigniting tensions in the hilly areas of Manipur. The incident, which took place on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, occurred a day after violent clashes erupted in the northeastern state.
In response to the distressing situation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah engaged in a conversation with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh regarding the video, further emphasizing the gravity of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court also expressed deep concern over the video, with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud urging the government to take prompt and decisive action. The CJI termed the incident as "the grossest of constitutional abuse" and stated that it is simply unacceptable to use women as instruments in an area of communal strife. He warned that if the government does not act promptly, the court would step in to address the issue.
The Manipur incident has raised serious questions about the safety and dignity of women in society, and the collective call for justice and accountability underscores the urgent need for concrete measures to prevent such atrocities in the future.
