Mizoram witnessed a mass exodus of people belonging to the Meitei community on Saturday, as fear gripped their hearts following a warning issued by a former insurgent organization. The warning came in the wake of the shocking viral video showing the horrifying incident of two Kuki women being paraded naked in Manipur, which sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of the Meitei community in neighboring Mizoram.
Reportedly, around 60 Meiteis, including government employees and students, hastily fled the state and sought refuge in Manipur. The situation reached a critical point, prompting Mizoram Home Commissioner H Lalengmawia to convene a meeting with the leaders of the Peace Accord MNF Returnees' Association (PAMRA), the organization behind the warning.
During the meeting, the Home Commissioner apprised the PAMRA leaders about the steps being taken to address the ongoing conflict in Manipur. Consequently, the organization decided not to proceed with their warning, bringing some relief to the panicked Meitei community.
However, the Mizoram government remained vigilant, deploying armed security personnel in areas inhabited by the Meiteis in the state capital Aizawl. The move was aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the community amidst the heightened tensions.
In a bid to address the concerns and reassure the Meitei community, the Home Commissioner also held a meeting with leaders of the All Mizoram Manipuri Association. He emphasized the government's commitment to their safety and urged them not to leave the state in fear.
The incident underscores the delicate intercommunity dynamics and tensions prevailing in the region. The viral video has not only ignited public outrage but also raised serious concerns about communal harmony and the safety of minority communities in both Manipur and Mizoram.
As the situation remains fragile, the authorities are closely monitoring developments and working towards maintaining peace and stability in the region. It is crucial to address the underlying issues and foster a sense of security among all communities to prevent further unrest and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
