Manipur Violence Investigation Intensifies as Judicial Commission Engages with Affected Individuals
Investigation into Violence in Manipur Moves Forward with Judicial Commission's Visit.
Manipur, July 14, 2023: Progress has been made in the ongoing investigation into the violence that has plagued Manipur as a 3-member Judicial Commission, led by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, recently made its first visit to the troubled state. The Commission has been assigned the crucial task of examining the circumstances surrounding the turmoil that erupted on May 3.

The Commission, consisting of Himanshu Shekhar Das, a retired bureaucrat, and Prabhakar Aloka, a former intelligence officer, alongside Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, arrived at the 36 Bn Assam Rifles camp in the violence-affected area of Churachandpur. Their primary objective was to engage with individuals residing in two relief camps established at the Salt Brook School and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School.

This significant development follows Union Home Minister Amit Shah's visit to Manipur on June 1, during which he announced the formation of a Judicial Commission headed by a retired Chief Justice-level Judge to investigate the incidents of violence. Minister Shah concluded his four-day visit to the strife-torn northeastern state by highlighting the establishment of a peace committee under Governor Anusuiya Uikey and security advisor Kuldiep Singh, as well as the involvement of members from civil society.

In addition to these measures, the Home Minister stressed the involvement of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the investigation of six cases related to the violence. This decision underscores the government's unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice.

The visit of the Judicial Commission to Manipur marks a significant milestone in the investigation process, as it represents a dedicated effort by the authorities to understand the root causes and circumstances behind the outbreak of violence. With the Commission engaging with individuals affected by the unrest, valuable insights and testimonies can be gathered to shed light on the events that transpired.

As the investigation progresses, the people of Manipur, as well as the nation as a whole, anticipate a comprehensive and impartial analysis from the Judicial Commission. The outcome of this investigation holds the potential to bring about justice, provide closure to the affected communities, and contribute to the restoration of peace and harmony in Manipur.
