Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding in Assam: Chirang and Bongaigaon Districts Worst Affected
Assam's Brahmaputra River Reaches Dangerous Levels, Flooding Threatens Chirang and Bongaigaon Districts.
ASSAM,14 July 2023: Chirang and Bongaigaon districts in the state of Assam, India, have been hit by floods as the water level of the Brahmaputra river rose due to continuous heavy rainfall across the region. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, issued a flood alert on Thursday, stating that neighboring areas would release surplus water from the Kurichu Dam.

To ensure preparedness, the Assam government has alerted district administrations to monitor the Beki and Manas rivers, as they have the potential to surpass the danger mark. The Royal Government of Bhutan informed the Assam government about the planned release of excess water from the Kurichu Dam, which prompted the Chief Minister to tweet about the situation. He emphasized the need for vigilance and urged officials to provide assistance to affected people in case the Beki and Manas rivers breach their danger levels.

Earlier this week, the flood situation worsened in Lakhimpur district, affecting approximately 60,300 individuals. Several new areas were inundated, causing 67 villages within four revenue circles of the Lakhimpur district to be submerged by floodwaters.

In addition to the aforementioned districts, other areas in Assam are also facing a flood threat. The Brahmaputra river has surpassed the danger level mark at Tezpur in Sonitpur district and Neamatihat in Jorhat district. The Disang river in Sivasagar district has also crossed its danger mark at Nanglamuraghat.

According to the flood report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 2,696 people have been affected in Dhemaji district, while an additional 2,866 people have been stranded in Biswanath sub-division in Sonitpur district.

The situation calls for immediate action and assistance to mitigate the impact of the floods on the affected population. Authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief measures and ensure the safety of the people affected by this natural calamity.
