Urgent Debate Scheduled: European Parliament Addresses Ongoing Violence in Manipur, India
Since May 3, Manipur has been plagued by ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities, resulting in distressing incidents of violence and arson. The crisis has escalated, leading to a tragic death toll exceeding 140 and displacing approximately 60,000 individuals who have been forced to flee their homes.
Opposition parties have criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led governments, both at the central and Manipur state levels, for their alleged failure to take sufficient measures to curb the violence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also faced criticism for his absence from the state and his silence on the unfolding situation.
In response to the dire circumstances, a motion for a resolution on Manipur was presented to the European Parliament on June 11. Categorized under "debates on cases of breaches of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law," the motion is scheduled for discussion on Wednesday. A vote on the resolution is set to take place on Thursday.
Although India maintains that the situation is an internal matter, the engagement of the European Parliament demonstrates international concern for the state of affairs in Manipur. This engagement reflects a shared desire to address reported human rights violations, uphold democratic principles, and ensure the adherence to the rule of law. The forthcoming debate and subsequent vote signify a collective effort to shed light on the matter and explore potential avenues for resolution.
