Ensuring Safety and Harmony: Mizoram Government Assures Meiteis in Wake of Conflict
Meiteis Leaving Mizoram Amid Ethnic Conflict Concerns.
In the aftermath of the recent ethnic conflict in Manipur, a number of Meiteis residing in Mizoram have decided to leave the state, opting for flights and buses to return to Imphal. This decision came after a press release from a group of former rebels, known as PAMRA, advised the Meiteis to exercise caution while in Mizoram due to the prevailing public sentiments surrounding the violence in Manipur.

Clarifying the situation, the Mizoram government stated that PAMRA did not issue a quit notice or any directive mandating the Meiteis to leave. They expressed regret that the press release had been misunderstood by some media outlets. Moreover, the government reassured the Meitei community of their safety and security within Mizoram and urged them not to be swayed by unfounded rumors. As a precautionary measure, the government deployed security forces to various institutions in Mizoram where Meitei students and workers are present, including Veterinary College, Mizoram University, RIPANS, and ZMC.

Up until now, there have been no reported incidents of violence or harassment against the Meiteis in Mizoram, as per the government's official statement. However, the Mizo Students Union plans to conduct a census of Meiteis in Mizoram and its institutions on July 24, 2023, to ascertain their numbers and understand their activities within the state. This move is aimed at gaining a clearer picture of the situation.

Nonetheless, some parents of Mizo students studying at RIMS in Imphal have expressed concern and requested the Mizo Students Union not to proceed with the census. They fear that carrying out such a survey may escalate tensions and jeopardize the safety of their children in Manipur.

Meanwhile, Mizo students at RIMS have reported feeling safe within the campus premises. However, the authorities at RIMS have advised them to refrain from venturing outside the hostel unless necessary for attending classes.

The situation between the Meiteis and Mizos in Mizoram remains delicate following the ethnic conflict in Manipur. The government's efforts to ensure the safety of the Meitei community and the Mizo Students Union's intention to conduct a census reflect the ongoing efforts to address concerns and maintain harmony in the region. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to foster understanding and peaceful coexistence.
