Delimitation Exercise in Assam Faces Legal Battle as Opposition Leaders File Petition in Supreme Court
Opposition Leaders Unite to Challenge Assam's Delimitation Exercise: Significant Political Development.
Guwahati, July 17, 2023: A major development has occurred in the political scenario of Assam, as ten influential leaders from nine opposition parties have joined hands to contest the delimitation exercise in the state.

These opposition leaders, who represent parties such as Assam Jatiya Parishad, INC, Raijor Dal, CPI(M), Trinamool Congress, CPI, Anchalik Gana Morcha, Nationalist Congress Party, and Rashtriya Janata Dal, have collectively filed a petition in the Supreme Court.

Led by senior advocate Fuzail Ahmad Ayyubi, the plea challenges the method used by the Election Commission to carry out the delimitation exercise in Assam.

The petition particularly questions the proposed changes in boundaries for the 126 assembly constituencies and 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. The opposition leaders argue that the current delimitation exercise appears to be biased in favor of the BJP, potentially harming the electoral prospects of other political parties in Assam.

This legal challenge has garnered significant attention and could have far-reaching consequences for the political landscape of the state.

Both the ruling party and the opposition are eagerly awaiting the Supreme Court's response to the petition, as it could shape the future dynamics of elections in Assam.
