BJP Leader Nalin Kohli: Uniform Civil Code Rooted in Indian Constitution, Not Political Agenda
BJP Holds Key Meeting Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections; Highlights Modi Government's Achievements.

Guwahati, July 06, 2023: Nalin Kohli, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emphasized the non-political nature of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), citing its explicit mention in Article 44 of the Indian Constitution. During a media interaction in Guwahati on Thursday, Kohli addressed concerns raised by NDA partners in Northeast India regarding the UCC. He emphasized that while diverse opinions are welcome in a democratic republic, it is ultimately the decision of Parliament that must be followed. Kohli reiterated that the UCC is a constitutional provision rather than a political agenda.

A significant meeting was held in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, where BJP leaders from various states, including Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, gathered to discuss the achievements of the Narendra Modi-led government over the past nine years.

However, some NDA allies in the region have expressed reservations about the implementation of the UCC. Zoramthanga, Chief Minister of Mizoram and President of the Mizo National Front (MNF), raised concerns about the potential impact of the UCC on ethnic minorities in India, particularly the Mizos. In a letter addressed to the Law Commission, the MNF expressed opposition to any steps taken towards enacting the UCC. Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya and leader of the National People's Party (NPP), another ally of the BJP, stressed the importance of considering exemptions for matrilineal societies, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and the Northeast region. Sangma called for a thorough examination of the UCC draft to better understand its provisions and implications.

The BJP is actively working to address the concerns raised by its allies and engage in a constructive dialogue to find common ground on the UCC. The party recognizes the diverse cultural landscape of the country and acknowledges the significance of respecting regional sensitivities when implementing reforms. The ongoing discussions and consultations within the NDA play a vital role in building consensus and ensuring the smooth implementation of any policy, including the UCC.
