July 25, 2023: In a shocking incident in the Morigaon district of Assam, a group of villagers resorted to vigilante justice against suspected cattle thieves, resulting in a fatal outcome. According to the Morigaon Superintendent of Police, Hemanta Kumar Das, the unfortunate incident occurred during the early hours of Tuesday in the village of Ahotguri.
It is reported that a gang of five individuals, believed to be cattle thieves, forcibly entered a villager's property with the intention of stealing cattle. Upon discovering the thieves in the act, the villagers reacted with anger and apprehended three of the suspects. The enraged mob subjected them to a violent attack, causing severe injuries.
Tragically, one of the suspects lost his life while being rushed to the hospital due to the extent of his injuries. The remaining two suspects were also gravely hurt and had to be urgently transported to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment.
In response to the escalating situation, the police promptly intervened to restore order. However, the mob's fury extended to the police, resulting in damage to a police vehicle and minor injuries to a constable, as stones were thrown at them.
Despite facing hostility, the brave police team managed to rescue the three suspects from the clutches of the villagers. To prevent any further escalation, authorities have deployed additional security forces in the area.
