Assam Police's Risky Operation: Encounter with Suspected ULFA Extortionists
Extortion Attempt by Banned Organization Foiled in Upper Assam; One Arrested
Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh recently issued a warning regarding extortion demands made by individuals claiming association with the banned terrorist organization ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam). The DGP's tweet highlights the gravity of the situation and emphasizes the Assam Police's commitment to curbing such unlawful activities.

In the past, several businesspersons in Upper Assam have received extortion demands, irrespective of whether these claims were genuine or fake. Assam Police took prompt action and apprehended some of the culprits while they were attempting to collect the extortion money. Unfortunately, during a shootout while trying to flee, one of the suspects sustained injuries after attacking police personnel.

The DGP has clarified that the collection of money under the name of ULFA, whether authentic or not, falls under the purview of Sections 17, 21, 24, 26, 39, and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). These sections address the collection of funds, using proceeds of terrorism, and may lead to the forfeiture of the properties of those involved in such illegal activities.

To tackle this menace effectively, the concerned district police and security forces have been instructed to take strict action against any individuals involved in extortion demands or the collection of the demanded money. The Assam Police's swift response underscores their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the state's economic development.

The DGP's tweet also serves as a warning to the general public, advising them not to participate in any form of extortion or collection of demanded money. By cooperating with law enforcement agencies, citizens can play a crucial role in combating such criminal activities and upholding the rule of law in the state.

The Assam Police, under the leadership of the DGP, remains steadfast in their efforts to safeguard the interests of the people and promote a secure and prosperous environment for the economic growth of the state. As they take ruthless action against extortionists and those aiding them, the message is clear: Assam will not allow its development to be held hostage by illegal elements.

The ongoing operations against such extortion attempts are a testament to the dedication and determination of the police force in maintaining peace and security in the region. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious activities or extortion demands to the authorities promptly, contributing to the collective effort to keep Assam safe from any potential threats.
