Assam Petrochemical Plant Paves the Way for Petrochemical Exports with Inaugural Methanol Shipment to Bangladesh
Assam's Petrochemical Sector Gains Momentum with First Methanol Consignment to Bangladesh.

Guwahati, July 04, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the Assam Petrochemical Plant for its inaugural shipment of methanol to Bangladesh, describing it as a significant step towards establishing Assam as a major player in the petrochemical export market. In response to a tweet from Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, PM Modi praised the industrial progress and highlighted its potential to benefit not only Assam but also the entire Northeast region.

The Assam Petrochemicals Plant in Namrup celebrated the ceremonial flag-off of its first consignment of methanol to Bangladesh on July 1, a clear indication of the state's determination to become a prominent petrochemical hub. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who officiated the event, also virtually laid the foundation for the development of the Joypur Chariali and Namrup Sonari Tiniali roads. These road projects aim to improve the transportation of industrial products from Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizers Corporation Limited, Assam Petrochemicals Limited, and Namrup Thermal Plant.

During the ceremony, CM Sarma highlighted the inauguration of the 500 TPD (tons per day) plant of Assam Petrochemicals Limited by PM Modi on April 14, 2023. The plant has now commenced methanol production, and CM Sarma expressed his delight in exporting APL-produced methanol to neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. This effort is expected to establish Assam as a thriving petrochemical hub and contribute to the financial stability of APL by expanding its product exports to foreign nations.

CM Sarma emphasized the support provided by the central government, which allocated Rs 100 crore for strengthening Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizers Corporation Limited (BVFCL). The state government, on the other hand, contributed to the construction of a hospital. CM Sarma also highlighted BVFCL's positive performance, with the company transitioning from a loss of Rs 98 crore last year to a profit of Rs 12 crore this year, a significant development for Namrup as an industrial town.

Reaffirming his commitment to the overall development of Assam, CM Sarma announced new road construction initiatives to improve connectivity in Naharkatia. The existing road from Joypur Chariali to Dillighat will be widened from 5.50 meters to 7 meters, and concrete drains will be installed along the roads in Namrup.

In a bid to promote self-reliance in Assam, CM Sarma revealed that the state government would provide Rs 10,000 to each of the 3.70 lakh members of self-help groups. These individuals would become eligible for a bank loan of Rs 25,000, with the government covering the interest, upon successful entrepreneurial endeavors using the initial amount.

The collaborative efforts of the central and state governments, alongside the Assam Petrochemical Plant, are expected to drive growth in the petrochemical sector and foster economic empowerment in Assam and the wider Northeast region.
