Assam Government's Bold Initiative to End Child Marriage Gains Momentum
Assam Government Takes Bold Steps to Tackle Child Marriage Menace.
July 28, 2023: In a determined effort to combat the alarming issue of child marriage, the Assam government has announced a comprehensive plan set to launch in September 2023. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared the details of this vital initiative during a press briefing in Bongaigaon.

The primary objective of the government's plan is to identify and take strict action against individuals involved in child marriage. Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that a crucial meeting with the Superintendents of Police (SPs) from various districts will be convened to investigate any recent instances of child marriage that may have occurred following the last year's drive. If found guilty, those responsible will face immediate arrest.

The urgency of addressing child marriage in Assam came to the forefront on July 27 when the Hailakandi police apprehended a man involved in a case of child marriage. As a result of this intervention, a 15-year-old girl and her infant, believed to be their son, were successfully rescued.

Child marriage remains a significant concern in Assam, prompting the government to reiterate its commitment to eradicate this harmful practice by the year 2026. Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the government has already put in place a series of measures to tackle the issue effectively. He expressed unwavering determination to take resolute action and put an end to child marriage in Assam by the set target year.

The Assam government's proactive approach to combat child marriage reflects its dedication to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in the state. By tackling this pressing issue head-on, the government aims to create a safer and more secure environment for the young population, ensuring they have the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive without the burden of early marriages. As the September 2023 operations unfold, the people of Assam eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on curbing the detrimental practice of child marriage.
