In a remarkable move towards promoting greenery and environmental conservation, the Assam state government is all set to create an urban forest in the heart of Guwahati. The scenic Borbari Hill, known for its natural beauty, will undergo a transformative journey to become a lush forest, showcasing the state's dedication to sustainability and preserving its natural heritage.
Spanning an area of 4 square hectares, Borbari Hill will soon be home to around 1,400 carefully selected tree saplings. These saplings will not only enhance the green cover of the region but also contribute to maintaining ecological balance. Spearheading this project is the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), ensuring that the hill's geological stability and surrounding areas are fortified.
The initiative is a significant step towards harmoniously integrating nature with urban development in Guwahati. This urban forest will offer a serene and green space amidst the city's hustle and bustle, providing residents and visitors alike with an ideal spot for leisure, recreation, and relaxation.
In a bid to further the state's green drive, Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has sought support from Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. During their meeting on July 14, CM Sarma requested assistance in obtaining one crore saplings for widespread plantation under the PM's LiFE Mission in Assam. In response, Minister Yadav assured support from experts in Dehradun, who will provide their expertise to ensure the successful plantation of these saplings.
To facilitate this ambitious plantation drive, the Chief Minister also shared plans to float a national tender for procuring the required saplings. This not only aligns with Assam's commitment to environmental protection but also contributes to the nationwide efforts toward sustainability.
The development of the urban forest at Borbari Hill and the massive plantation drive demonstrate the state's strong determination to combat climate change, preserve its natural heritage, and create a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
