Guwahati, Assam: In a devastating turn of events, Amak Sonam, a promising boxer, tragically lost her life on Sunday morning due to the severe injuries sustained in a recent accident. The accident occurred on 5 June, involving Sonam, karate player Sangio Jomin, and two others. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at the GNRC Hospital in Guwahati, Sonam's injuries proved fatal.
At just fourteen years old, Sonam had already made a name for herself in the sports community. Her outstanding performance in the Sansad Khel Spardha earned her a well-deserved gold medal. The young athlete's potential and talent were evident, capturing the attention and admiration of many.
Sonam's journey to success was not without its challenges. She faced immense adversity at a young age when she tragically lost both her parents, Tapung Sonam and Yaging Sonam, leaving her and her four siblings orphaned. Despite these hardships, Sonam's determination and passion for boxing shone through, making her a true inspiration.
As a student of Class 9 at KV No 1 in Naharlagun, Sonam dedicated herself to both her academics and her boxing training. She was a valued trainee at the Sports Authority of India's Special Training Centre in Naharlagun, honing her skills and pushing herself to new heights.
The news of Sonam's untimely demise has left the Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) and its district bodies grief-stricken. In a show of respect and mourning, they observed two minutes of silence to honor the memory of this talented young athlete whose potential was cut short far too soon.
Kiren Rijiju, the Central Minister of Earth Science and a staunch advocate for sports in India, expressed his heartfelt condolences on Twitter. Rijiju recognized Sonam's incredible talent and highlighted her recent gold medal win in the Sansad Khel Sphardha 2023. He lamented the loss of such a bright star and extended his thoughts and prayers to Sonam's grieving family, hoping they find solace during this difficult period.
