The accident occurred on 5 June, involving Sonam, karate player Sangio Jomin, and two others. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at the GNRC Hospital in Guwahati, Sonam's injuries proved fatal.

Sonam's journey to success was not without its challenges. She faced immense adversity at a young age when she tragically lost both her parents, Tapung Sonam and Yaging Sonam, leaving her and her four siblings orphaned. As a student of Class 9 at KV No 1 in Naharlagun, Sonam dedicated herself to both her academics and her boxing training. She was a valued trainee at the Sports Authority of India's Special Training Centre in Naharlagun, honing her skills and pushing herself to new heights.
The news of Sonam's untimely demise has left the Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) and its district bodies grief-stricken. In a show of respect and mourning, they observed two minutes of silence to honor the memory of this talented young athlete whose potential was cut short far too soon.
