Supreme Court Petition Highlights Urgent Need for Justice in Manipur's Kuki Community Violence
NEW DELHI: Manipur Tribal Forum Delhi (MTFD) has taken a significant step in addressing the distressing issue of alleged ethnic cleansing aimed at the Kuki community by filing a writ petition (Civil) No. 540 of 2023 before the Supreme Court of India. The petition focuses on the role of two armed communal organizations, namely "Arambai Tenggol" and "Meitei Leepun," in orchestrating attacks and violence against the Kukis in Manipur.

On May 8, 2023, the MTFD brought this pressing matter to the attention of the court, expressing its lack of confidence in the state and its police force to safeguard the tribal population. The petition raises concerns regarding the credibility of assurances provided by the Union of India (UOI) and the Chief Minister of Manipur, alleging their involvement in a communal agenda targeting the Kukis.

The public interest litigation (PIL) underscores the urgent necessity of apprehending and prosecuting all the leaders implicated in the violence. The MTFD emphasizes that relying solely on empty assurances from the authorities will be inadequate and emphasizes the need to address the underlying causes of the violence, restoring peace and justice in the state.
