The India Meteorological Department (IMD) provided updates during the meeting, stating that Cyclone 'Biparjoy' is expected to make landfall between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan near Jakhau Port in Gujarat on June 15th. It is predicted to be a very severe cyclonic storm with sustained windspeeds of 125-135 kmph, gusting up to 145 kmph. The coastal districts of Gujarat, particularly Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Jamnagar, are likely to experience heavy rainfall, including extremely heavy falls. Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, and Junagarh districts are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on June 14th and 15th.
The IMD has been issuing regular bulletins since the cyclonic system's onset on June 6th, providing the latest forecasts to all concerned states and agencies. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is closely monitoring the situation round-the-clock and maintaining continuous communication with the state government and relevant central agencies. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has already pre-positioned 12 teams equipped with essential rescue equipment, while 15 additional teams remain on standby.
Various defense and security forces, including the Indian Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, and Army, are actively engaged in relief, search, and rescue operations. Ships, helicopters, and surveillance aircraft are being deployed along the coast to ensure timely assistance. The Army's Disaster Relief and Medical Teams, as well as those from the Navy and Coast Guard, are also on standby to provide assistance wherever necessary.
The Prime Minister was also briefed on the measures undertaken by the Government of Gujarat to address the cyclone's impact. Review meetings at the district level, involving the Chief Minister and relevant authorities, have been conducted, demonstrating the state administration's preparedness to tackle any emergency situation. The Chief Secretary of Gujarat and central ministries/agencies concerned are in constant communication with the Cabinet Secretary and Home Secretary.
