Imphal: An explosion occurred on the evening of 21 June, damaging a bridge located near the adjoining area of Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai and Kwakta along Tiddim Road. The blast, caused by an explosive device planted inside a parked Mahindra Scorpio four-wheeler vehicle, has raised concerns about the involvement of insurgents in the region. Three boys were injured in the incident and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have registered a Suo-Motu case under FIR No. 635(6)2023 at Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station, invoking multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 400/121/120-B/243/326/504/506/307/427, as well as sections 5/3 of the Explosive Substances Act and section 4 of the PDPP (Prevention of Damage to Public Property) Act 1984. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the vehicle entered from the Churachandpur side, but the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown.
Given the suspected involvement of insurgents operating within the state and possibly across the border, the case has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the interest of national security. The NIA, renowned for its expertise in handling cases related to terrorism and insurgency, will take charge of the investigation to identify the individuals or groups responsible for the explosion.
