Manipur's Kuki Women Protest in Delhi, Demand End to Ethnic Violence

In ShortWomen from Manipur's Kuki tribe protested in Delhi, seeking an end to ethnic violence. Clashes between tribal groups and the Meitei community have caused casualties and displacement. The Home Minister has pledged to restore peace and instructed security forces to take action. Efforts are ongoing to address the underlying issues.

New Delhi: Women from Manipur's Kuki tribe staged a protest outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's residence in New Delhi, calling for an end to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state. The demonstration follows a recent vigil held by members of the Meitei community in Imphal.

Expressing their concerns, one protester stated, "Despite assurances, our community continues to face attacks in Manipur. Lives are at risk, and we seek help from the Home Minister and Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

The protest comes after a gun battle between security forces and insurgents in Manipur resulted in the death of one security personnel and injuries to two others. The region has witnessed heightened tension and violence, with rioting and ethnic clashes claiming the lives of 80 individuals and displacing 35,000 since May.

The Indian Army confirmed intermittent firing between security forces and insurgents, with effective retaliation from the former. Search operations are currently underway.

The ethnic violence originated from clashes between tribal groups and the majority Meitei community over economic benefits and quotas. Tribal communities are concerned about the potential extension of these benefits to the Meiteis.

During his recent four-day visit to the state, Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the government's commitment to peace and prosperity in Manipur. He instructed security forces to take strict action against any activities that disrupt the peace.

The situation in Manipur remains tense as efforts continue to restore calm and address the underlying issues contributing to the violence.
