Manipur Government's Relief Initiative: 3,000-4,000 Pre-Fabricated Houses to Provide Shelter for Violence-Affected Residents
Manipur Government to Build Pre-Fabricated Houses for Violence-Affected People

In response to the ongoing violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that the state government will construct 3,000-4,000 pre-fabricated houses to accommodate the people who have been forced to leave their homes. The Chief Minister, during his visit to relief camps, stated that these pre-fabricated houses would be ready within two months.

Pre-fabricated houses are structures that are built off-site and then assembled at the designated location. They provide a quick and temporary solution for those who have been displaced from their homes.

Expressing concern for the suffering of the affected people, the Chief Minister emphasized that the government aims to provide temporary accommodation until a permanent arrangement can be made to shift them back to their original places. The construction of 3,000-4,000 pre-fabricated houses is underway, with necessary materials already ordered.

The materials are expected to reach Imphal, the capital city, within the next 10-15 days. The government is currently identifying suitable locations to set up these houses, ensuring that the affected individuals can be relocated within two months.

The recent ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur has resulted in numerous houses being burnt down and the tragic loss of over 100 lives. In response, the state government imposed curfews in 11 districts and temporarily suspended internet services to prevent the spread of rumors.

The clashes initially erupted on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized by the hill districts to protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community. The Meiteis, who comprise around 53 percent of Manipur's population and predominantly reside in the Imphal Valley, clashed with the tribal communities of Nagas and Kukis, who constitute approximately 40 percent of the population.

The construction of pre-fabricated houses by the Manipur government aims to address the immediate housing needs of the affected people and provide them with a safe and secure living environment. It is a step towards restoring normalcy and ensuring the well-being of those impacted by the unfortunate incidents of violence.
