Tezpur, Assam: In a bizarre turn of events, a man has been apprehended in Tezpur for impersonating himself as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sonitpur district. The accused, identified as Ankur Saikia, was arrested on Monday after allegedly extorting money from several individuals while posing as the DC.
Ankur went to great lengths to deceive people, claiming that he had been appointed as the new DC of Sonitpur district, complete with a team of assistants and security officers. He even traveled in a convoy of three vehicles to further solidify his false identity.
To make his impersonation seem more authentic, Ankur hired bodyguards and arranged for convoy cars, creating an illusion of authority and legitimacy. However, his charade came to an end when the police intervened.
Law enforcement authorities have arrested Saikia, along with a 10-member team consisting of his associates and escorts, in connection with the incident. It has been revealed that Saikia is originally from the Golaghat district.
During interrogation, the accused claimed that he had cleared the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) examination and received an appointment letter via email from an alleged "official" Assam Government ID. However, further investigation exposed the appointment letter as a forgery.
It is important to note that Deba Kumar Mishra has officially assumed the role of the current DC of Sonitpur district, rendering Ankur's impersonation even more fraudulent.
The incident has left the local community astounded and raises concerns about the ease with which someone can manipulate others by exploiting their trust. The authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the full extent of the fraud and identify any potential victims who may have fallen prey to Ankur's deception.
