Manipur: In a remarkable move aimed at promoting peace and security, a drop box has been installed at the residence of L Susindro Meitei, a BJP legislator from Imphal East, to collect weapons that have been snatched from security forces. This innovative initiative has garnered significant attention, particularly from the local youth, who have eagerly seized the opportunity to anonymously surrender a staggering 130 weapons, including sophisticated automatic rifles.
A large poster, prominently displayed at a covered shed outside Minister Susindro Meitei's home, bears a clear message in both English and the local Meitei language: "Please drop your snatched weapons here." The tagline below it, "feel free to do so," indicates that no questions will be asked regarding the origin of the weapons brought in.
To ascertain the credibility of this drop box initiative, a reporter visited the location this morning and discovered several weapons, including a couple of automatic rifles and live ammunition belts, already deposited inside.
Minister Susindro Meitei, who had been touring his constituency area to encourage young villagers to participate in the peace process by surrendering their weapons, explained over the phone his motivations for setting up this anonymous facility. He stated, "Often, individuals who wish to surrender arms hesitate due to fear of the police. This is why I decided to create an anonymous box, providing them with a safe and secure method to relinquish these weapons."
Since its inception a few days ago, the drop box initiative has witnessed an overwhelming response, with approximately 130 weapons received thus far.
This extraordinary initiative, led by MLA Susindro Meitei, highlights the community's commitment to fostering peace and stability. By creating an environment where individuals can anonymously surrender weapons, the initiative not only aims to reduce violence but also provides a platform for dialogue and reconciliation. As the drop box continues to attract attention and gain popularity among local youth, it remains to be seen how this effort will contribute to the overall peace-building process in Manipur.
