A landmark judgment was passed by a special court in Mizoram's Aizawl on Friday, convicting an Assam resident for swindling a substantial sum of ₹1.33 crore from five contractors in Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam. The convict, Mustaqur Rahman, hailing from Guwahati, was found guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act by Judge HTC Lalrinchhana. The court is set to announce the quantum of punishment on June 5.

Mustaqur Rahman's partner-in-crime, Lalremthanga, who served as the former managing director (MD) of the Mizoram Agriculture Marketing Corporation Ltd (MAMCO), was previously sentenced in November last year to five years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹5 lakh. The combined amount misappropriated by the two convicts totals ₹268 lakh.

The case came to light when a report on malpractices and impropriety among certain employees at MAMCO was submitted to the Vigilance Department by Zothankhuma, MD of MAMCO, on March 25, 2015. Subsequently, the Anti Corruption Bureau launched an investigation into the matter.
