Enhanced Security Measures Implemented for Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati
GUWAHATI: With the aim of ensuring the safety and well-being of devotees attending the Ambubachi Mela, the State government of Assam has implemented a robust security system. In order to maintain law and order and provide a secure environment, the police have significantly bolstered their presence during the festivities.
To augment security measures throughout the five-day Ambubachi Mela, a dedicated team of 800 volunteers from various organizations, including scouts and guides, civil defense, and private security firms, will be deployed in and around the Kamakhya Temple premises. Additionally, three strategically located police control rooms will be established at Kamakhya Cutting, Prashanti Lodge, and the VIP parking area near the temple hilltop. Furthermore, eight additional police assistance booths will be set up along the route leading to the hilltop, ensuring immediate police support if required.
In a bid to enhance surveillance capabilities, a substantial number of CCTV cameras will be installed. This decision stems from the unfortunate incident that occurred in 2019 when a female body was discovered within the Joy Durga temple premises, leaving a lasting impact on the minds of pilgrims.
Commissioner of Police, Diganta Borah, expressed, "While that incident was an isolated occurrence and was promptly resolved by the Guwahati police, we understand the apprehension it has caused among devotees. To prevent such incidents in the future, our police force will be strategically deployed, and CCTV surveillance will be implemented at multiple locations. We have also urged local residents residing in and around Nilachal hill to remain vigilant when visiting the temple."
In preparation for the Ambubachi Mela, Commissioner of Police, along with other senior officials, conducted a comprehensive briefing for officers and personnel of the City Police. The briefing covered various aspects of security, law and order, crowd management, traffic regulations, and the expected professional conduct of personnel throughout the Ambubachi Mahayoga festival.
The implementation of these enhanced security measures aims to ensure a safe and peaceful Ambubachi Mela experience for all devotees. With the collective efforts of the police, volunteers, and heightened surveillance, the authorities are committed to maintaining a secure environment during this auspicious event.
