NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Central government has allocated ₹145 crore to Nagaland for the establishment of a Unity Mall in Dimapur. The purpose of this initiative is to promote and showcase the state's unique One District One Product (ODOP) offerings, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The announcement was made during an ODOP Sampark event organized by the Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in collaboration with Invest India and the Department of Industries and Commerce of Nagaland. The event aimed to create awareness about ODOP and PM Gati Shakti initiatives, with a focus on supporting local industries and improving logistics.
Sumita Dawra, the Special Secretary of DPIIT, highlighted the efforts of DPIIT and Invest India in conducting a National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) Drive in Kohima. The drive specifically focused on chili farming, with more than 30 farmers from Kohima participating in a workshop.
During the event, documentation for organic certification was completed for 15 chili farmers, while the verification process for others is still ongoing. This certification will not only provide better access to international markets but also ensure better prices for the farmers.
Dawra also emphasized the government's commitment to improving logistics for ODOP products from Nagaland, including chili, turmeric, kiwi, and pineapple. Efforts will be made to enhance facilities through schemes such as Krishi UDAN and expanding railway connectivity.
Furthermore, the DPIIT has instituted the One District One Product Awards, which will acknowledge the outstanding work done by states, districts, and Indian missions abroad in promoting economic development and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. These awards are set to be launched on June 25, 2023, through the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal.
Local officials from various departments, including Industries, Agriculture, Horticulture, and APEDA, also stressed the need for an integrated Customs Depot, a dedicated Krishi rail wagon up to Dimapur, and improved connectivity under the Krishi Udan Scheme for organic products.
Officials from DPIIT and Invest India highlighted several initiatives undertaken under the ODOP program to empower Indian products. These initiatives include design sensitization workshops, the ODOP GeM Bazaar on the Government e-Marketplace, and ODOP exhibitions.
