Despite facing challenges and delays, the construction of the new assembly building, supervised by the Assam Public Works Department, is nearing its end. Chief architect Dullal Mukherjee and architectural firms Simplex Structure and JD Creations have contributed their expertise to the exterior and interior design, respectively, resulting in a revised cost of Rs 351 crore, surpassing the initial budget of Rs 234 crore.
Spread across a sprawling 10-acre plot, the new Vidhansabha or Legislative Assembly building complex consists of three distinct structures: the main assembly building, Annexe I, and Annexe II. The centerpiece, the main assembly building, boasts an impressive area of 18,459 square meters and features a distinctive pitched roof with a glass top, allowing ample natural light to illuminate its interior. Thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of the Legislative Assembly members, this two-story structure is equipped with modern infrastructure and amenities, including central air conditioning, seven lifts (including a glass lift and an escalator), ensuring convenience and accessibility for all.
The interior of the assembly building has been adorned with natural stones such as granite, marble, and limestone, showcasing a harmonious blend of elegance and durability. Advanced mechanical methods, utilizing embedded metal anchors and ties, have been employed to securely install these stones.
The excitement surrounding the new Vidhan Sabha Complex is evident, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressing his anticipation in a recent tweet. "Yesterday, I inspected the progress of Assam's new Vidhan Sabha Complex. In August 2023, Assam will witness the grand inauguration of this remarkable development."
