Assam Police and NIA Joint Operation Leads to Arrest of Four Alleged Terrorists(Representational Image) |
GUWAHATI: In a series of search operations carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with assistance from the Assam Police, four suspected terrorists were arrested in different districts of Assam. The arrests took place in Goalpara and Bongaigaon on Friday and Saturday.
The individuals, who had been previously arrested by the NIA and recently released on bail, were apprehended once again. The NIA had launched the search operations on Friday, deploying a special team along with teams from the Assam Police.
According to Superintendent of Police Rakhesh Reddy of Goalpara district, the NIA was conducting the operation as part of a case registered in their Guwahati office. The local police provided support as instructed, but they did not possess specific information regarding the case.
In Goalpara, three individuals were arrested. They have been identified as Abdus Suwahan from Govindapur, Jalauddin from Matia, and Abdus Suwahan from Tinkonia, as per the police sources. The arrest in Bongaigaon was that of Hafizur Rahman, a resident of Kabaitari area under the jurisdiction of Jogighopa police station.
These four men had previously been detained in August of last year based on specific information received by the NIA. Hafizur Rahman, who worked as a teacher at Markazul Ma Arif Qariana Madrasa in Goalpara, was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities. Subsequently, the state government demolished the madrasa.
In September, the NIA registered two cases against the individuals for their alleged connections with Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). The charges filed include criminal conspiracy, attempting to wage war against the nation, conspiring to commit certain offenses against the state, recruiting individuals for terrorist acts, being a member of a terrorist organization, and more. The cases were registered in Guwahati under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The NIA continues its investigation into the activities and networks associated with these suspected terrorists.
