ASSAM: Panic in Jorhat Village as One-Horned Rhino Strays into Local Area
One-Horned Rhino Causes Panic as it Strays into Village near Mariani, Jorhat District
In Short: A one-horned rhino caused panic among villagers after it strayed into a village near Mariani in Jorhat district. Forest officials have been alerted, and a team from Assam State Zoo will rescue the rhino. This is not the first time the rhino has been spotted in the area. The situation is being closely monitored.

JORHAT: Locals in a village near Mariani, Jorhat district, were taken aback when a one-horned rhino entered their vicinity on Wednesday morning, creating a moment of panic.

Officials reported that the rhino was spotted by villagers of Nakachari Dohutia village as it strayed into a paddy field. Concerned by the unexpected visitor, the villagers immediately informed the forest officials. Animesh Kalita, the Forest Range Officer of Mariani, confirmed that the rhino had sought refuge near a canal.

Upon receiving the news, Kalita stated, "Today morning, some villagers spotted the rhino and informed us. We have informed the higher authorities, and a team from Assam State Zoo will be dispatched to rescue the magnificent animal."

Interestingly, this is not the first encounter with the rhino in the region. "We first spotted the rhino inside Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in January this year. We have also noticed the rhino's footprints multiple times in the village area," Kalita highlighted, underscoring the rhino's previous presence in the vicinity.

Forest officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of both the rhino and the villagers. (ANI)
