Assam Legislative Assembly Suspends Employees for Sharing Viral Accident Footage
Guwahati: Following the circulation of a CCTV footage capturing a tragic road accident in Ganeshguri, Guwahati, where a high school student lost her life, the Assam Legislative Assembly has taken swift action. Up to three employees, including a Marshal, have been suspended for allegedly sharing the footage with the media without proper authorization.
The Marshal identified as Sanjeev Rai and two other employees have faced suspension pending an investigation into their alleged involvement in disseminating the accident video. However, no information has been provided regarding any action taken against the contractors of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The incident has drawn attention to the overall poor condition of the roads in Guwahati due to extensive digging carried out by JICA for pipe-laying purposes. Residents have been grappling with numerous potholes throughout the city, a consequence of the ongoing infrastructure project.
Expressing concern, Gauravv Somani, the Assam state unit representative of the All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC), criticized the suspension of the Legislative Assembly employees. He emphasized the need for authorities to take proactive measures against JICA officials and address the problematic road conditions caused by their activities.
Somani also criticized Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha for what he perceives as a lack of effective administration. He called for the government to take immediate action and prevent such incidents from recurring.
In response to the accident, DC Kamrup(M) Pallav Gopal Jha called for an urgent meeting to review safety precautions and measures in collaboration with all relevant agencies involved in road excavation.
The Kamrup Metro Administration stated on Twitter that strict instructions were issued and appropriate action will be taken against any agency found responsible for negligence.
Earlier today, district administration officials arrived at the accident site to install barricades around the dug-out hole, which many believe contributed to the tragic incident. The excavation was carried out by JICA for the installation of a water pipeline.
Efforts are underway to address the safety concerns raised by the accident and to ensure improved road conditions in the future.
