Remembering the Darkest Chapter: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Commemorates the Emergency of 1975
Panjabari, Assam: Today, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to the historic struggle for democracy as he reflected on the grave impact of the Emergency imposed in India in 1975. Speaking at the Lok Tantra Senani Sanman program held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakhetra, Sarma emphasized the importance of upholding freedom, liberty, and the power of the people, and he honored the sacrifices made by Loktantra Senanis during that challenging period.

Recalling the Emergency, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma described it as a dark chapter in India's history—a blatant assault on democracy, where fundamental rights were curbed and dissent was suppressed. The Emergency period, which lasted from 1975 to 1977, marked a critical juncture when democratic principles were undermined, and the voice of the people was stifled.

As a mark of recognition for the courageous Loktantra Senanis who fought against the draconian Emergency, Chief Minister Sarma felicitated a few of these brave individuals during the Lok Tantra Senani Sanman program. The event, held at the esteemed Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, served as a platform to honor and express gratitude to those who stood up for democracy during those tumultuous times.

The Assam government, under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, also took a significant step to provide financial support to the Loktantra Senanis and their families. A sum of ₹15,000 was transferred to 91 Senanis and their kins as a token of appreciation and acknowledgment for their sacrifices.

Expressing his gratitude, Chief Minister Sarma said, "I am truly blessed to be among our Loktantra Senanis from Assam. Had it not been for the courage and resilience of these brave men and women who fought against the draconian Emergency, our next generation would have never experienced the light of a democratic society."

The Lok Tantra Senani Sanman program served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during the Emergency, who fearlessly stood up for democratic values and the rights of the citizens. Their unwavering commitment and determination laid the foundation for a democratic India, where the power of the people and the principles of freedom and liberty are held sacred.

As Assam pays tribute to the Loktantra Senanis, their heroic struggle will forever be etched in the annals of history. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's participation in the program and the government's gesture of financial assistance reaffirm the state's commitment to honoring and preserving the democratic spirit that forms the bedrock of the nation.

In commemorating the Emergency, let us not forget the significance of safeguarding democracy, cherishing our fundamental rights, and valuing the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly to uphold the principles that define a democratic society. The legacy of the Loktantra Senanis serves as a constant reminder of the power of the people and the indomitable spirit that paves the way for a brighter and freer future.
