Amit Shah: I'm coming to Manipur and stay in Manipur to solve the problem
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced his plans to visit Manipur in an effort to restore peace and stability to the violence-stricken state. In response to recent incidents of violence, Shah expressed his commitment to engaging with the people of Manipur during his three-day stay. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and urged all parties involved to maintain peace, assuring them that justice would be served.
In a bid to address the escalating tensions between tribals and non-tribals, Shah called for a peaceful resolution and encouraged both the state and central governments to engage in constructive discussions. To demonstrate his dedication to the cause, Shah has arranged a meeting with a delegation of 15 MLAs from Manipur in Guwahati, Assam.

Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, a cabinet minister from Manipur, revealed that Amit Shah had stressed the need for peace and confirmed his visit to the strife-torn state from May 29 to June 1, 2023.

The recent outbreak of violence in Manipur arose from clashes during the 'Tribal Solidarity March,' organized by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in Torbung area of Churachandpur district. The march aimed to protest the demand by non-tribal Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The confrontations between tribal and non-tribal groups prompted the imposition of curfews in eight districts and the suspension of mobile internet services throughout Manipur.

Prior to this incident, tensions were already high due to conflicts over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to smaller-scale agitations. Manipur's population is comprised of Meiteis, who constitute around 53% and primarily reside in the Imphal Valley, and Nagas and Kukis, who make up about 40% and primarily inhabit the hill districts.

The situation further escalated when the residence of Manipur PWD Minister Konthoujam Govindas in Bishnupur district was vandalized by a group of individuals. The attackers claimed that the government had failed to adequately protect locals from militants belonging to another community. Fortunately, the minister and his family were not present during the attack.

To address the growing unrest, the Indian Army and paramilitary forces have been deployed in Manipur to restore law and order. The situation remains tense, and the visit of Home Minister Amit Shah is seen as a crucial step towards peace-building efforts in the region.
