40 Terrorists Eliminated in Defensive Operations in Manipur, Confirms CM Biren Singh
MANIPUR: Around 40 terrorists have been eliminated in defensive operations in Manipur, according to statements made by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, as reported by ANI and PTI news agencies. The security forces have taken stringent action against these militant groups, who were reportedly utilizing sophisticated arms against the civilian population.
The clashes that unfolded across various locations in Manipur today were a result of confrontations between Kuki militants and security forces during an ongoing disarmament operation. Chief Minister Biren Singh clarified that these clashes were not driven by rival communities, but rather involved armed groups and security forces.

Firing incidents were reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West, and YKPI in Kangpokpi, according to officials quoted by PTI.

The violence in Manipur has roots in underlying tensions and disputes. Ethnic clashes have resulted in the loss of more than 75 lives, initially sparked by a 'Tribal Solidarity March' organized on May 3 to protest the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community. Further tensions arose due to conflicts related to the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, leading to smaller protests and demonstrations.

The population of Manipur is comprised of Meiteis, who make up about 53% of the state's inhabitants and mainly reside in the Imphal Valley, while Tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute approximately 40% and primarily reside in the hill districts.

To restore peace and normalcy in Manipur, over 10,000 personnel, including around 140 columns from the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other paramilitary forces, have been deployed.
