Assam DGP Suspends Panbazar Police OC Following Assault on Delivery Agent
Inspector Bhargav Borbora suspended after public outcry over the incident.
Guwahati: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh has suspended Inspector Bhargav Borbora, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Panbazar Police Station, after a video surfaced showing a police officer assaulting a delivery agent. The incident, which took place near the Jail Road traffic point in Fancy Bazar, has sparked widespread outrage.

DGP Singh addressed the matter promptly, stating, "The behavior of Inspector Bhargav Borbora is unacceptable. He is being placed under suspension with immediate effect, and CP Guwahati has been instructed to appoint another officer immediately." Additionally, a departmental inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident thoroughly.

Incident Details
The altercation occurred around 6:30 PM when the delivery agent allegedly ran a red signal near Jail Road. Eyewitnesses reported that a police officer pursued the agent, dragged him aside, and confronted him violently.

Video footage captured by a bystander shows the officer gripping the delivery agent’s neck and shouting aggressively, with remarks such as, "Where do you think you are going?" and "I will kill you." Despite onlookers’ attempts to intervene, the officer continued the assault.

Eyewitness Accounts
One witness, who recorded the incident, revealed that the officer threatened them when he noticed the filming. "He told me to stop recording and warned others to stay out of it," the witness said.

Police Justification
In response to the uproar, a police official explained that the delivery agent had ignored instructions to stop and attempted to enter a "No Entry" zone, justifying the officer’s initial attempt to intercept him.

Public Reaction
The video has sparked discussions about police accountability and the use of force, with many calling for reforms to prevent such incidents. The suspension of Inspector Borbora is seen as a strong step by the Assam Police towards maintaining public trust and ensuring accountability within the force.

Further updates on the inquiry and any additional actions will be closely monitored.
